What is traditional Japanese Ju Jitsu?

Japanese Ju Jitsu (JJJ) dates back to the 1500s is the original battlefield martial art of the samurai. It’s effectiveness in real-world combat and self-defense made it the basis for other arts that followed like Karate, Judo, and today’s BJJ ground-based form of the art.

Japanese Ju Jitsu focuses on practical techniques that blend judo throws, strikes, joint manipulation, and control of the attacker on the ground to neutralize opponents efficiently.

Rooted in tradition, yet adaptable to today’s challenges, traditional Japanese Ju Jitsu is a complete system of self-defense, strategy, and discipline.

What are classes like?

In one word… FUN!  At Rough Hands, our traditional Japanese Ju Jitsu classes blend tradition with a welcoming, lighthearted atmosphere. We honor the roots of Japanese Ju Jitsu — wearing uniforms (called a Gi), bowing as a sign of respect, and using formal Japanese terminology — but we’re far from the rigid “militaristic” schools you might find elsewhere (we’re not dolling out pushups as punishment).

Our training is serious, focused on honing our skills to defend ourselves in a modern world, but our classes are casual, friendly, and built on a sense of camaraderie. We train hard, but we support each other along the way.  Whether you're looking to build confidence, sharpen your skills, or challenge yourself, you’ll find a community at Rough Hands that feels like family.

This is especially true for first-timers.  New students are welcomed and treated like old friends and not “fresh meat”.
